The Willow Run athletic department recently announced its coaching staff for the upcoming 2012-13 winter sports season.
The boys’ basketball staff includes four coaches new to Willow Run. They are varsity head coach Tim Cain, varsity assistant Scott Stark, junior varsity coach Jon-Lamar Hamilton, and freshman coach L.J. Frazier. This is Cain’s first varsity head coaching job after junior varsity stints at Ann Arbor Skyline and Dexter. He also was Saline’s varsity assistant in 2011-12. Stark is best known for coaching the Milan and Dundee varsity girls’ teams and for directing the first-ever Common Bond AAU basketball team. As for Hamilton (Kalamazoo Valley & Ashland) and Frazier (Eastern Michigan University), they recently completed their college basketball playing days.
The Flyers have a new varsity girls’ basketball staff as well. Clifford Russell will take over as the head coach, while Andryia Goins will be his assistant. Russell played college basketball at UTEP and Wayne State before coaching at a variety of schools. His experience includes being the athletic director and varsity boys’ coach at Eastern Washtenaw Multicultural Academy, as well as the assistant men’s coach at Schoolcraft Community College. He also was a varsity boys’ and girls’ assistant at his alma mater, Bloomfield Hills Roeper, and most recently was the varsity girls’ assistant at Lincoln. Goins, on the other hand, played at Belleville and coached recently at Ypsilanti.
Other first-year Willow Run coaches are Kelly Mickel, who will lead the varsity cheerleaders, and Charissa Bass, who takes over the middle school cheerleaders.
Veteran coach Marvin Jones will handle Willow Run’s varsity wrestling program. As for the middle school basketball squads, Isiah Daniel (8th grade) and Latin Davis Sr. (7th grade) return to lead the Flyers. Daniel also will coach the middle school girls later this winter.
